Fringe Notes No.1

I am painting this summer. A small garage is my outpost. For many years I have been fascinated by qualities of the urban environment including the urban-rural fringe—-the spaces and edges of the landscape. My paintings this summer, 2026, follow specific works from the summer of 2025. Here are some of my daily notes:

Urban-Rural Fringe

6-28-26

The work explores a true period of life—the place where people live and work. The expression is honest.

6-29-26

Art helps people to understand feelings of hope, mercy, and forgiveness. Artists portray the conflict of having emotions.

6-30-26

To utilize traditional techniques of depiction to portray iconic qualities of contemporary culture.

7-1-26

Painting is a responsive act and an inventive act. To paint, one must see, interpret, and invent.

7-2-26

Painters engage with a balance of detail and generality, the art is knowing how.

7-3-26

The craft of art involves the attention of the artist. Each work of art seeks to match the vision of its conception.

7-4-26

Take time to re-charge as an artist, experience life, see, listen, and reflect.

7-5-26

Live with your work, it takes time to form a relationship—let the art speak back to you.

7-6-26

Sometimes one must go forward with bold strokes, and, sometimes one must go forward with ordered strokes. Art involves both sides of passion.
